A walk down the Cap de Creus canyon, Northwestern Mediterranean Sea: Recent processes inferred from morphology and sediment bedforms ArchiMer
Lastras, G; Canals, M; Urgeles, R; Amblas, D; Ivanov, M; Droz, Laurence; Dennielou, Bernard; Fabres, J; Schoolmeester, T; Akhmetzhanov, A; Orange, D; Garcia Garcia, A.
The Cap de Creus canyon, northwestern Mediterranean Sea, belongs to a complex network of submarine canyons cutting the western Gulf of Lion continental shelf and opening into the larger Sete canyon. Swath bathymetry data, MAKAM deep-towed side-scan sonar imagery and 5 kHz high resolution seismic reflection profiles show striking morphologies in the Cap de Creus canyon floor and walls. As a consequence of the canyon head and the upper reach severe incision, the continental shelf dramatically narrows in front of the Creus Cape promontory. The upper canyon has a flat-bottomed thalweg incised in a megascale sediment furrow field displaying hyperbolic seismic facies. The tens of kilometres long linear furrows extend also over the middle canyon down to 1400 in...

Application du laser a la detection sous-marine: Experimentation d'un imageur ArchiMer
Kervern, G; Legall, A.
Nowadays, side-looking sonar is the only equipment able to carry out long-range underwater imaging. The use of optics is limited to short-range identification by means of conventional video-cameras. However, active optical systems (lidars) manufacturing, using a blue-green laser, will enable optics to hold its place in the field of long-range underwater imaging. After a short comparison between acoustics and optics in underwater detection and a description of the proper features of underwater optical propagation, we present the different conceivable imaging principles and propose a method to determine their performances. The experimentations described concern a lidar imager mock-up using one of the imaging principles proposed. The pictures obtained deal...

Cartographie du Middelkerke Bank: dynamique sédimentaire, structure géologique, facies sédimentaires OMA
Lanckneus, J.; De Moor, G.; Berné, S.; Chamley, H.; De Batist, M.; Henriet, J.-P.; Terwindt, J.; Trentesaux, A..
The paper analyses the first results obtained in the framework of the RESECUSED project (MAST) whose objectives are the detailed analysis of the behaviour of sediments and bedforms of and on the Middelkerke Bank (Belgian Continental Shelf) and the study of the interaction between water movement, sediment transport and bedform mobility. The results include a preliminary analysis of the residual bottom load transport paths deduced from side scan sonar registrations, a map of the sandwaves on the bank, the first grain-size results of the superficial sediment and a study on the internal structure of the bank.

Cartographie et évaluation du stock de crépidules en baie du Mont Saint-Michel, en 2004 ArchiMer
Blanchard, Michel; Clabaut, Philippe; Abernot-le Gac, Chantal.
In 2003 and 2004, 3 cruises were organized using observations systems and sampling techniques to carry out cartography and stock assessment of the Slipper-limpet population (Crepidula fornicata) in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel (Western Channel). This was done as part of the National Programme of Coastal Environment (Programme National d'Environnement Côtier - PNEC). The study helped to update previous data collected in 1995-96 with similar techniques : side-scan-sonar and submarine video for observation, and scuba diving and grabs for samples collection. Results show that during an eight years period, the limpet population spread in the southern part of the bay and that its stock rose about 50%, reaching about 150,000 metric tons, south of a...

Etat de la prolifération de la crépidule (Crepidula fornicata) en baie de Saint-Brieuc. ArchiMer
Hamon, Dominique; Blanchard, Michel.
The aim of this report is to provide an original method of mapping slipper limpet beds in the bay of Saint-Brieuc (Western Channel) by means of side scan sonar and submarine video. An evaluation of the biomass completes the distribution of limpets. The total fresh weight is about 250 000 tons

Répartition et évaluation du stock de la crépidule (Crepidula fornicata), entre le cap Fréhel et le Mont Saint-Michel (Manche Ouest) ArchiMer
Blanchard, Michel.
This report deals with results obtained in 1995 and 1996 through a grant of Council of Brittany. The distribution and stock assessment of the slipper-limpet population (Crepidulafornicata) is analysed, in the near shoreline between Cap Fréhel and Mont-Saint-Michel. Several cruises allowed to use side-scan sonar, underwater video and scuba diving observations. Hamon grab has been used for quantitative sampling. Several direct observations were done ashore for complete informations. On this seaside of Brittany, it is observed that the population is mainly concentrated along the coast and main densities are found in the bay of Cancale, around deep oyster beds. Total fresh biomass is estimated about 149 000 metric tons. Local reasons and consequences of such a...

Ultra Wide Swath Sea interferometric multibeam echo sounder with sea bottom imaging system. ArchiMer
Hammerstad, E; Pohner, F.
The SIMRAD EM12 is a new full ocean depth multibeam echo sounder, operating at 13 kHz. By use of interferometric signal processing techniques it will achieve an ultra wide swath geometry of 150 degrees, corresponding to 7.5 times the depth of water. The system will in addition to the bathymetry produce a fully corrected sidescan sonar image of the seafloor, on to the depth soundings, the EM12 has the capability to generate a sidescan image of the seabed.
